I was walking alongside one of my oldest friends, Katy, and her first-born daughter, Luisa, this past weekend in Austin. I was meeting Luisa for the first time. I was a little caught up in the (sur)reality of this little human's striking resemblance to my dear friend and the sur(reality) of my dear friend being a mother. We were walking to her car, I believe, and the camera was hanging around my neck. Luisa began clapping on command and rather than attaching the camera to my face, I simply turned the lens towards them next to me and snapped blindly just for giggles. I came home to find these little treasures on my memory card. I can't really articulate why they move me - Luisa's baby hands poised together, Katy's smile in the top left corner - I don't know. But, I know that these images grabbed my heart and squeezed. So happy for my friend and so happy for Luisa to have a mother like my friend.
